Surprise, Jerry!

Back on 6 and 7 Jun 2014, a plan went into effect to surprise one of the wonderful botanical inspirations in my life: my friend, Jerry Addington the GREAT. Jerry was hosting an assemblage of carnivorous plant growers at his place in the Washington countryside and this was something that I did not want to miss. I figured it would be the perfect time to surprise Jerry.

In addition to this, another good friend of mine – the legendary Wes Buckner and his family were all going to be there as well! I saw Wes, Megan, and Caleb a couple of weeks prior to Jerry’s event. They stopped by my place on their road trip out from Tennessee and I got to show them a little bit of the SF Bay Area. Good times!

Anyway, I figured I might as well just surprise them ALL at Jerry’s. Helping me organize this surprise was my brother from another mother – Kinjie Coe. (Yeah, I knowwww – Coe and Co!) I flew out to Portland the day before Jerry’s gathering on Friday, 6 Jun 2014 where Kinjie picked me up and we started on our journey to Jerry’s. On the way up there, Kinjie took me on a little detour to visit another local grower, The Professor. What a way to start a wonderful weekend full of carnivorous plant goodness. (See previous post.)

It was amazing seeing plants, but it was definitely awe inspiring to to meet many other fellow growers and carnivorous-plant-o-philes in person! I am very thankful that I got to meet so many amazing people on this epic weekend.

Below you’ll find a short video (gotta love Jerry’s reaction!) as well as a slideshow and some highlight photos.

Kinjie – thanks so much for helping make this happen, bro. Chiemi, Malia, Bently, and Ipo – a huge thank you for allowing a couple of plant crazed guys into your home. :) Jerry – as always I am filled with gratitude for your hospitality and generosity. I am beyond blessed to know you. Thank you.

Sarracenia “Green Monster” x alata AF

Hey everyone! Hope you’ve been well. The past couple of months have been quite eventful, but rest assured that things in The Asylum are still pretty busy! I’m working on re-potting seedlings that have been in community pots and I’m finding some fascinating things within those pots.

One of the recent discoveries was a pot of S. “Green Monster” x alata AF that I had almost forgotten about. You know, outta sight, outta mind… Well, it was pretty nice finding that stash. One of the seedlings from this cross are photographed below. It’s still pretty young but showing some potential…

I know it doesn’t look like much, but below is a new table I recently put together that I’m slowly filling up with seedlings. So far, it’s all  antho free but it will be a mix of cool stuff. The seedlings look all scattered and messed up, but they’ll look a little better once they establish themselves and put up some new pitchers. I’m really anticipating some cool plants. At the moment, I’m actually building a 2nd table. Never ending Sarracenia expansion!

Sarracenia ‘Leah Wilkerson’ x ‘Adrian Slack’– 2011 Cross

I recently came across a pot of S. ‘Leah Wilkerson’ x ‘Adrian Slack’ seedlings while rummaging through seemingly endless pots of seedlings to repot – and this one seedling really caught my eye. The cross was done by Brooks Garcia in 2011 and I started to germinate the seeds in 2012. The seedling below is 2 years old and time will tell what it will be like a few years from now.

It’s the same parentage as the plant that I’m calling S. “Legacy” - however the S. “Legacy” cross was done by Brooks a little earlier (in 2008.) This other batch of S. ‘Leah Wilkerson’ x ‘Adrian Slack’ has some promising seedlings, but this one that I separated out looks to hold some nice potential. It’s throat marking marking and pale top remind me of S. “Legacy”, only this plant has a nice contrasting deep red/black border around the lid, nectar roll, and down the central midrib. It’s one plant I’ll be keeping my eye on. As always, great work, Brooks!

A couple of weeks ago we had our annual BACPS (Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society) show and sale. It’s always great connecting with fellow growers during the BACPS meetings… and winding up with a few more plants in the process too! Here are a couple of Nepenthes that found their way into the plant haul from the show and sale.

2014 Sarracenia Seeds: So It Beings

First PodSarracenia ‘Reptilian Rose’ x “Legacy”- 2014 Cross

So it begins! Last week I harvested my first seed pod of the 2014 season. This year, it was S. ‘Reptilian Rose‘ x “Legacy” – which I hope should yield some interesting progeny.  Since then, I’ve harvested about 20 or so pods, with many more to come! The next generation of Sarracenia goodness is on the way. Stay tuned, fellow Sarraceniaphiles! I’ll be listing many of these seeds for distribution later this season. Lots of great stuff (hopefully) is on the way!

Inverse Veined Moorei

Back in 2010, fellow Sarracenia grower James Soe Nuyn of Lost In The Landscape did a brilliant cross which has resulted (in my humble opinion) in a very elegant moorei. The cross is Sarracenia leucophylla “burgundy” x flava v. maxima. I noticed that a few crosses with flava v. maxima with a stronger colored plant sometimes come up with similar results. Not sure all flava var. maxima’s will do this though.

As the new pitchers unfold and begin to color up, the green veins light up quite nicely against the gentle pink and white of the pitcher. Lovely work, James! I am a fan.

Last year, fellow Sarracenia grower Eric Morrow sent me small divisions from a few of his plants. These plants are still young divisions (not of blooming maturity yet), but they are maturing quite nicely. Thanks, Eric!

Sarracenia – Summer Sanctuary 2014

It’s hard to believe, but summer 2014 is drawing to a close and autumn is right around the corner. I put together clips from the past couple of months to commemorate this Sarracenia sanctuary’s summer. Enjoy!

Nepenthes lowii x campanulata

Here’s an interesting Nepenthes hybrid that I received from Drew Martinez during the 2014 Annual Bay Area Carnivorous Plant Society show and sale this past June. It’s been a nice addition to the Nepenthes sector of The Asylum. One thing I that I find really fascinating is the sweet sugary secretion under the pitcher lid. This is thanks to the Nepenthes lowii all up in the genes. (Yeah, I did taste it and it’s mildly sweet… maybe I harvest some to use in my coffee? Heh heh!) Thanks again, Drew!

Sarracenia “Saurus”

Sarracenia “Saurus” never ceases to amaze me. This select cross of S. leucophylla “Purple Lips” x flava var. ornata was done by the legendary Phil Faulisi. I remember when I first saw this beast of a plant at Phil’s place in 2009 – I had to pick my jaw off the floor. I jokingly told Phil, “Phil – dude that thing is a Sarracenia-Saurus!” He then goes “Dude, you know what? You just named that plant!”

The pitchers on my division this year got to over 30 inches. If the plant wasn’t divided, they would of gotten close to the 40 inches that it normally attains. (See Phil’s post here.)

The pitchers below are fresh fall pitchers that recently opened up this past week. They will color up and get dark as the season rolls on. You can see the pitcher on the right in the first photo starting to darken up. For the time being, I’m enjoying the beautiful contrast of the veins as they lace up the pitcher. Simply amazing! As always, brilliant work, Phil!

Here’s a few little baby Nepenthes that I’m watching grow with great anticipation. Some don’t look like much right now, but I hope that in time I can look back at these photos and see just how far they’ve come. It will be a few years before I see anything considerable but it will be a fun journey to watch these babies grow for me. Aren’t they just adorabs?! Like OMG, cute-plant overload!!
